Go For It
Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Travelled
By Alastair Henry & Candas Whitlock
“GO FOR IT” is a memoir about Alastair and Candas: two retired Boomers who wanted to help make a difference in the world. They met one day by chance, fell in love, and with a shared passion to improve the lives of others, set off on a new path of adventure in travel and volunteering.
“GO FOR IT” also describes their personal journeys, before and after they met. Follow Alastair and Candas as they shed their material possessions and exchange their comfortable Canadian lifestyle to live simpler lives in lesser developed tropical countries, while helping to improve the lives of others less fortunate.
“GO FOR IT” is a memoir about a couple in their sixties who met by chance, fell in love, and with a shared passion for life, set off on a new path to help make a difference in the lives of others.
Follow Alastair and Candas as they prepare for retirement and then shed their material possessions to go overseas to serve as CUSO volunteers with local non-government organisations. They describe detailed episodic experiences of their volunteer work in Bangladesh, Jamaica and Guyana, and their back-packing travel in Tobago and Antigua.
Read about:
- What it’s like to be a volunteer in a developing country,
- How they adapted to their new environments by accepting ‘what is’.
- What life lessons they learned from their immersion inn a different culture.
- Where they went, what they saw and what they did.
This memoir came about through the urging of family and friends to share their stories with others so they might enjoy reading about their episodic adventures on roads less traveled; be better informed about volunteering overseas; and, if the ‘shoe fits’, to be inspired and GO FOR IT.

…Many of us feel a basic urge to help others, but we’ve not been able to do this because life’s been too busy – raising a family, pursuing a career, catering to domestic and work obligations, etc. With retirement come options and new opportunities… Whether we realize it or not, we all have a bank of skills, experience, and talents that we’ve developed over our working lives we can use to help others, especially those in less fortunate situations. Being involved with and contributing to something outside our own life is part of the human way of being…
…Through experiences, we discover and learn about ourselves. Volunteering is about compassion, connection, and the manifestation of a good heart wanting to engage with a cause or purpose far greater than ourselves. It isn’t about receiving recognition, or anticipation of a return: it’s about being in this world in ways that enhance all forms of life and create no harm… Volunteering provides us with life lessons that precipitate shifts in conscious living, personal growth, and transformation. Each of us has a special gift to give to the world – ourselves. The path to serving others lies beneath our feet and our journey will lead us to live a purposeful and meaningful life…
