In Jan 2019 Alastair was diagnosed with IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) – an incurable lung disease with high morbidity (3-5 years), put on oxygen 24/7 and given a predicted life expectancy of 18 months.
Early in 2020, at the urging of his children, he investigated the possibility of having a lung transplant and to his surprise was told that he was eligible.
He went on the transplant list in June 2020 and on September 3, 2020, at 4.30 p.m. went into the operating theatre at the Toronto General Hospital for a double lung transplant. He came out on September 4, at 2.30 a.m. with new lungs and was discharged from hospital fourteen days later.
One of the things Alastair was able to accomplish with his Gift Of Life was to finish writing his novel “The Soldier and the Orphan” which he started in 2016 and to narrate it as an audiobook.
Alastair is extremely grateful to his donor family, whom he will probably never know, as well as the medical team at the Toronto General Hospital for their incredible skills in performing the transplant surgery and for their amazing aftercare.
Alastair is now a Trillium Gift of Life Advocate and promotes Organ and Tissue Donation & Transplantation by serving as a Guest Speaker on the subject to Service Clubs, community groups etc.
